A stranger came to the city in spring. And gave challenge in the Queen’s court. Three answered him, and were felled. The Queen herself resolved to take up arms, and go out to him at noon. But the black knight resolved to go out to him at dawn. When she woke in the morning, her armor was gone.

The stranger struck three blows, and suffered one. Down to the courtyard came the black knight, to contend with her thief, even as the stranger gave way. And she had pity on him in his solitude. He went away from that city with a great love for her people. And carried with him this secret certainty: his opponent was not of mortal make. (12/11)
